What is the Cryptic Notes mode in Identity V?
The Cryptic Notes game mode in Identity V is essentially a new entertainment mode. This means that it’s different from the ranked playlists, since there’s no competitiveness involved. It’s part of the Violent Struggle game mode category, and players can use any costume they get from platforms such as LootBar.
Cryptic Notes is completely different from the traditional Identity V formula. It’s a lore-driven exploration mode where players enter narrative books. Every book is written by Orpheus and helps players further understand the lore that the game is going for. It isn’t built around chasing or decoding objectives, but uncovering hidden story fragments.
How does the Cryptic Notes mode work in Identity V?
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Cryptic Notes is the closest thing Identity V has gotten to being an RPG. Players are thrust into different sandbox areas that are more like dungeons. Every dungeon ties into Orpheus’ writing and is filled with fragmented lore and hidden clues.
The goal of every player is to uncover this lore and the clues. This is doable by completing PvE objectives and story interactions. What makes this game mode even cooler is that players must fight NPC monsters. This is done by using the chosen character’s unique abilities, or by finding and using weapons such as shotguns. Thanks to this, even survivors who don’t have any traditional damaging abilities can acquire weapons to level the playing field.
Some of the weapons shown in the reveal trailer include:
A flamethrower
A shotgun
A cane
Speaking of survivors, players have the choice to choose any survivor they want, in which case the game will let you have four survivors. The twist is that you can also play as hunters in this mode. It’s unknown whether you can have more than one hunter at this time, but the trailer only shows one hunter standing against what seems like an NPC monster.
How is Cryptic Notes different from the regular Identity V modes?
The Cryptic Notes mode is drastically different than Identity V’s other game modes. This one has players prioritizing PvE exploration and story progression as opposed to a competitive PvP asymmetrical survival game. It isn’t a survivors vs hunters mode, but one where players must navigate PvE threats. In a way, it’s similar to the Resident Evil games, where every area has a new monster chasing us.
The objective here is also different. In the regular mode, survivors are tasked with escaping, while hunters must hunt down all of the other players. Here, the goal is to uncover lore by exploring all sorts of storybooks. There are different ways to navigate the dungeons in Cryptic Notes. This can be by breaking magical glasses, looking for clues inside locked boxes that require quick-time events, or even discovering hidden routes and trap doors.
Both modes have drastically different structures. Cryptic Notes is a stage-based mode that’s similar to an RPG, where you navigate an area filled with NPC enemies. The regular mode had match-based rounds with fixed win conditions. This changes the focus from competitive gameplay and rank progression to story, immersion, and exploration.
Finally, there’s combat. Survivors usually don’t get the chance to fight in the regular modes. This is because they primarily focus on abilities that help them escape or CC the hunter. The Cryptic Notes mode is different, since there’s PvE combat against AI enemies. Survivors can grab weapons that let them deal with most threats, and it wouldn’t be surprising if everything leads to a massive boss fight. There’s a strong chance that the final boss will be Ms. Nightingale as a hunter.
Is Cryptic Notes a PvE or PvP mode in Identity V?
The Cryptic Notes mode is strictly PvE. You aren’t fighting other players, but AI-controlled enemies. Environmental mechanics and exploration projects play large roles in this mode, ensuring that players can take their time doing whatever they want. There’s no sense of urgency in this mode, even if it exists inside a multiplayer game framework.
The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to go at everything alone. Having some friends playing alongside you as survivors may be a good idea. It’ll also likely make NPC combat much easier. You and your friends can also wear some nice outfits after buying an Identity V top up or two to take the role-playing to a new level.
Conclusion
Identity V’s core game mode is iconic enough to keep things fun. However, it’s a good idea to have additional modes that help players learn more about the game’s lore. Cryptic Notes is clearly present for exactly this, and it’s looking like one of the more enjoyable modes that the game has added.
