MapleStory Idle RPG: Best Legendary Artifacts Guide

If you've been playing MapleStory: Idle RPG for a while and wondering why some players pull ahead faster than others despite having similar gear, Artifacts are usually a big part of the answer. Artifacts are a special type of equipment that give your character passive effects when equipped; things like increased attack, bonus final damage, crit boosts, and survivability tools. What makes them different from regular gear is that their bonuses stack with everything else and apply every fight, whether you're grinding stages, pushing Chapter Hunt, or clearing Party Quests on Chaos difficulty. If you're looking to top up and fuel your artifact farming runs, LootBar is a good option for MapleStory: Idle RPG currency at competitive rates, and using LootBar before a big push means your resources are ready when the content opens.

You unlock Artifacts by completing Guide Quest 348. Once unlocked, you can equip them and upgrade them using materials farmed from in-game content. On top of each artifact's individual effect, there's also a Resonance Amplification system that gives you extra stat bonuses based on which artifacts you have equipped together, so the combination you run matters. Artifacts come in three rarity tiers: Epic, Unique, and Legendary. Legendary is the highest tier, meaning those artifacts have the strongest base effects and the highest upgrade ceiling. That's the focus of this guide.

Inventory Effect vs Special Effect

Every artifact actually gives you two separate things: a Special Effect (the unique ability you read about, like "increases Final Damage when defeating a target") and an Inventory Effect, a flat stat bonus you get just from owning the artifact, even before equipping it as your active pick. Epic artifacts give Attack 50-300 and Max HP 500-3,000 as their Inventory Effect across upgrade levels. Unique artifacts give Attack 100-600 and Defense 70-420. Legendary artifacts each have their own unique Inventory Effect stat tied to their theme, Star Rock gives Defense, Book of Ancient gives Critical Rate, Soul Contract gives Skill Damage, and so on. This means collecting and upgrading artifacts has value even for the ones you're not actively running as your equipped picks, since the Inventory Effect applies passively just by having them in your collection.

Don't try to rank artifacts by one universal list. The same artifact can be top-tier in one mode and useless in another. Always match your artifact choice to the content you're currently pushing — more on this in the Priority by Content section below.

Artifact Tier List

This is a general shortlist based on community-tested priority across all content modes. Use it as a starting point, not a final decision. As noted above, the same artifact can rank very differently depending on what you're pushing.

TierArtifactsWhy
SSThe Book of Ancient, Star Rock, Bottle of Emotion, Icy Soul RockConsistently strong across most content. Scaling effects that compound well the more you invest in them.
SHexagon Necklace, Sayram's Necklace, ChaliceHigh impact in their respective contexts. Sayram's and Chalice are particularly versatile across farming and bossing.
AFire Flower, Candle, Silver Pendant, Athena Pierce's Old Gloves, Old Music BoxStrong situational picks that pull ahead in the right content. Not always best-in-slot, but rarely wasted.
BFlaming Lava, Peach Tree Herb Pouch, Lunar DewSolid utility picks. Lunar Dew is especially valuable if you're struggling to survive in harder content.
SituationalSoul Contract, Lit Lamp, Soul Pouch, Ancient Text Piece, Zakum's Stone Piece, Horntail's ScaleBest-in-slot for their specific content, but not worth upgrading heavily unless that mode is your main focus.

Alliance Badge, Horn Flute, and Cursed Doll are still being tested by the community after their May 21 release. Early reads show Alliance Badge as strong in party content, Horn Flute as high value for companion builds in Chapter Boss, and Cursed Doll as a solid Arena pick. Settle tier placement after testing in your own content first.

Priority by Content Type

This is where the real decisions get made. Match your artifact setup to the content you're actively trying to push, and swap presets when you switch modes.

  • Chapter Hunt
Focus on kill speed and normal monster output. Top picks here are The Book of Ancient, Chalice, Sayram's Necklace, and Hexagon Necklace. Soul Contract is a strong addition if you want faster cooldowns for more skill activations per minute.
  • Stage Breakthrough
You need consistent wave clears plus boss damage for the final target. Icy Soul Rock, Hexagon Necklace, and Fire Flower all perform well here. The key is balancing AoE clear speed with single-target damage on the stage boss.
  • Bossing (XX-10, Raids)
Single-target window artifacts take priority. Zakum's Stone Piece for Zakum raids, Horntail's Scale for Horntail, Old Music Box if debuffs are killing you. For general bossing, Star Rock and Silver Pendant stack well.
  • Arena
Matchup tools matter more than raw damage here. Cursed Doll is strong for its accuracy check mechanic. Lunar Dew keeps you alive long enough to win close matchups. Soul Pouch for the dedicated Final Damage bonus in PvP fights.
  • Guild War & Conquest
Party support and long-fight scaling become more important. Alliance Badge shines here for the stackable party ATK boost. Flaming Lava is solid when enemies carry buffs or barriers. Ancient Text Piece for Guild Conquest specifically.
  • Dungeons
Different dungeons reward different effects. Weapon Dungeon and Growth Dungeon don't always favor the same artifact. Check which dungeon you're running — Clear Spring Water is specifically strong in Growth Dungeon.

For players who want to cover multiple modes without swapping constantly, the safest general setup is The Book of Ancient and Star Rock as your locked-in slots, then Sayram's Necklace as the flexible third pick. This combination gives you good output across Chapter Hunt, Stage Breakthrough, and bossing without needing to swap whenever you switch content. Once you're comfortable managing presets, start building dedicated loadouts per content type. If you're investing to push Chaos Party Quests specifically, topping up through LootBar for MapleStory: Idle RPG currency keeps your resources ready so you can farm artifact materials without waiting on recharges.

How to Upgrade Efficiently

Knowing which artifacts to upgrade is only half the equation. How you spend your upgrade materials is just as important.

Upgrade Priority Rules

  • Upgrade your SS-tier artifacts first. Book of Ancient and Star Rock have the highest return on investment because they work across the most content types simultaneously.
  • Don't spread upgrade materials evenly across too many artifacts early on. A single well-upgraded artifact outperforms three partially upgraded ones at the same total material cost.
  • Situational artifacts (Soul Pouch, Lit Lamp, Ancient Text Piece) don't need heavy investment unless that specific mode is a major focus. Equip them for the content, but don't upgrade them past low levels unless you're actively running that content every week.
  • The three new May 21 Legendaries (Alliance Badge, Horn Flute, Cursed Doll) are worth collecting and getting to a base level quickly, but wait on heavy investment until the community settles their tier placement after more testing.
  • Resonance Amplification rewards running certain artifact combinations. Check which bonus your equipped set gives and factor that into your decision when swapping between loadouts.

Final Thoughts

The biggest mistake players make with artifacts is treating them like a one-size-fits-all ranking. The Book of Ancient and Star Rock are genuinely great picks that work almost everywhere, and those are the safest starting investments. But once you're past that baseline, the rest depends on what you're pushing. Chapter Hunt wants kill speed. Bossing wants single-target damage. Arena wants matchup tools.

The three new May 21 Legendaries add even more options to the pool, and with Chaos difficulty now live, party-facing picks like Alliance Badge are becoming more relevant than they were a few months ago. Start with the SS-tier picks, build toward content-specific loadouts as your material reserves grow, and don't rush into heavy spending on situational artifacts before you've covered the universal ones. For topping up your currency to keep the farming going, LootBar is a reliable spot to get MapleStory: Idle RPG Top Up currency at better rates so you can keep your upgrade progress moving without interruption.
