Last War Season 6: Squad Compositions After the 4+1 Change

If you've been playing Last War: Survival for a while, you already know how much the 4+1 hybrid squad defined the way people built their teams in Seasons 4 and 5. It gave you the flexibility to sneak in an off-type hero (think Tank squads running Adam or Air squads with Murphy) while still pulling the full 20% type boost. It made mixed formations viable, and a lot of the strongest PvP builds revolved around it.

But Season 6: Shadow Rainforest pulled the rug out. The 4+1 card is gone, and honestly, if you haven't adjusted your lineup yet, you're probably already feeling it in ranked. I've been testing squads since the season dropped, and this guide is everything I've figured out so far about what actually works now. If you're also looking to get your heroes upgraded faster and save some money on in-game resources, LootBar is a solid spot to check out and they've the cheapest option I've found for Last War.

What Actually Changed in Season 6

The Hybrid Squad (4+1) card was a Tactics Card that let you run one hero of a different type in your squad while still keeping the full 20% type stat bonus. It sounds small on paper, but it was the backbone of the most powerful mixed squads in the game. Air + Murphy, Tank + Adam, and a bunch of other creative combos that made Season 4 and 5 PvP genuinely fun to experiment with.

Season 6 removes it completely. No replacement. No workaround. If you run an off-type hero now, you lose that stat bonus, and in high-level PvP, that gap is too big to ignore. In its place, three brand-new Universal Tactics Cards were introduced and each one tied to a specific squad type. These are the cards that define the new meta:

Three new Universal (Diamond) cards replace the 4+1 in Season 6

  • Aftermath Burst: Boosts damage-over-time for all Missile heroes at battle start. Great for Swift and Fiona builds.
  • Dimensional Crit: Gives your highest-Attack Tank hero a Crit Rate buff. Works best with Kim or Stetmann as your main damage dealer.
  • Frontal Suppression: Buffs Attack Speed for 3 Aircraft heroes in the back row. Formation placement matters a lot here.

The three new Universal cards can be leveled up to 12 in Season 6, higher than previous seasons. If you're lucky enough to pull one with a UR "Tactics Card Level Up" attribute, it can go up to level 15. That's a meaningful boost, especially for Global Expedition. All three cards only activate during PvP battles and Global Expedition so they don't do anything in standard PvE, meaning your zombie-farming build stays the same as before.

These new Universal cards aren't cheap to level up, so if you're serious about pushing your squad this season, make sure your top-up game is sorted. I've been using LootBar for a while now and honestly the rates are better than most places, plus it works directly for Last War.

The New Meta: Pure Squads Are the Standard

The biggest shift in Season 6 isn't just about the cards, it's the philosophy behind squad building. Mixed formations were the norm because they gave you type flexibility. Now, running a full 5-hero squad of the same type is basically mandatory if you want to compete at a high level.

Here's why that matters: the 20% type bonus is only active when all five of your heroes share the same type. The moment you slot in an off-type hero, you drop to 15%, and without the 4+1 card to compensate, there's no way to recover those stats. Top players are already locking in pure squads, and the gap between optimized pure formations and anything "hybrid-ish" is widening as the season progresses.

That said, pure squads come with a major vulnerability. One of the best things about mixed formations was that they naturally softened type counters. A little bit of coverage from different types meant you weren't as exposed to the rock-paper-scissors system. Pure squads don't have that. Tank gets countered by Aircraft, Aircraft by Missile, Missile by Tank. If you're running all-Missile and you walk into an all-Tank squad, you're in trouble.

This is where Counter Reversal becomes one of the most important cards you can run in Season 6. It reduces the damage you take and increases the damage you deal when you're up against your counter type. It doesn't fully negate the disadvantage, but in a close fight, it absolutely changes the outcome. Make it a core part of your setup regardless of which squad type you play.

Best Squad Builds for Season 6

With the 4+1 gone, you pretty much have to commit to one type now. Full Missile, full Tank, or full Aircraft, pick one, slot in the matching Universal card, and build around it.

Tank Squad — Dimensional Crit Setup

Tank Squad S6 Last War Survival

Core Heroes: Kimberly · Murphy · William · Marshall · Stetmann

The Tank squad is the most beginner-friendly pure formation because Tank heroes are the easiest UR roster to build in the early game. Murphy and Williams handle survivability, Kim and Stetmann put out the damage, and Marshall speeds everything up with attack buffs. Dimensional Crit targets the hero with the highest Attack stat, so it'll land on whoever you've invested in the most and make sure that's Kim or Stetmann depending on your gear situation. If you're leveling Kim's Awakening, keep that in mind too since Awakened skills can shift which hero comes out on top for raw Attack.

Core Cards: Quickstride — Morale Boost · Quickstride — Quick March (attack) or Garrison — Defensive Regroup (defense)

Missile Squad — Aftermath Burst Setup

Missile Squad S6 Last War Survival

Core Heroes: McGregor · Adam · Tesla · Swift · Fiona

The Missile squad gets the most interesting new card this season. Aftermath Burst adds a damage-over-time buff to all Missile heroes, but it's worth knowing this specifically boosts DoT skills, not regular attack damage. That means Swift's burn auto-attack and Fiona's radiation are the main beneficiaries.

McGregor is your frontline priority for survivability, especially if you're pushing into higher PvP brackets where your backline needs more time to do work. Hero Awakening is a big factor here too, getting your core 5 to Exclusive Weapon level 20 unlocks the Awakening skill, which is a big deal for this squad's damage ceiling.

Core Cards: Quickstride — Morale Boost · Quickstride — Quick March or Battlestreak — Morale Boost

Aircraft Squad — Frontal Suppression Setup

Aircraft Squad S6 Last War Survival

Core Heroes: DVA · Carlie · Lucius · Morrison · Schuyler

Aircraft counters Tanks, and Tanks are the most popular early-season squad, which makes this formation extremely strong right now. Frontal Suppression buffs 3 Aircraft heroes in the back row, so placement actually matters here. You'll need to decide whether to keep DVA at the front (protecting her from back-row attacks) or move her back to grab the Attack Speed buff. Both options have trade-offs and it really depends on how hard you're getting targeted. As the season matures and servers push into Day 70+, Aircraft squads become even more valuable because of the type advantage over the dominant Tank meta.

Core Cards: Quickstride — Morale Boost · Quickstride — Quick March or Garrison — Defensive Regroup

Garrison Defense Still Works — Here's How to Run It

Good news if you were running a Garrison setup in Season 4 or 5: it's still fully viable in Season 6. The core idea is the same. Garrison cards are built around defense, reducing deaths and letting you regroup faster during extended fights. The only change is that you swap out the 4+1 card and replace it with either your matching type-specific Universal card or Counter Reversal, depending on whether you prioritize offense or survivability.

Card SlotCardWhy It's Here
Regular 1Universal — (Aftermath Burst / Dimensional Crit / Frontal Suppression)Matches your squad type for the specific buff
Regular 2Universal — Counter ReversalReduces counter-type vulnerability for pure squads
Regular 3Garrison — DurationExtends Garrison active skill window
Regular 4Garrison — Attribute BoostFlat stat boost for the squad
Core 1Garrison — Defensive RegroupActive skill — core of the Garrison identity
Core 2Garrison — Morale BoostPassive buff to squad stats

Conclusion

Season 6 is a real reset. The 4+1 card being gone isn't just a patch note, it's a full rebuild of how squad composition works in Last War: Survival. Pure single-type formations are now the baseline, Counter Reversal is more valuable than it's ever been, and the three new Universal cards reward you for going all-in on one type instead of mixing. Whether you're running Tanks early, switching to Aircraft mid-season, or sticking with a Garrison defense setup, the fundamentals are the same: match your Universal card to your squad, keep Counter Reversal in the slot next to it, and start leveling your SSR battle cards as early as you can.
