If you've spent any real time in Elden Ring, you know how frustrating it is to finally pick up a weapon you love, only to realize you're completely out of Smithing Stones to upgrade it. The Lands Between is massive, and while stones are scattered everywhere, they run out fast, especially once you start experimenting with multiple builds. That's where Bell Bearings come in. These key items, when handed over to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold, permanently unlock specific tiers of Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones for unlimited purchase. There are 4 Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearings and 5 Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings in the base game, covering stones all the way up to tier 8 and Somber tier 9 respectively.

What Are Bell Bearings and How Do They Work?
Bell Bearings are special key items tied to miners, merchants, and bosses throughout the Lands Between. Once you pick one up, head to the Roundtable Hold and interact with the Twin Maiden Husks. Select "Offer a Bell Bearing" and hand it over, that tier of stones will then be available for purchase using your Runes indefinitely. This is a game-changer for weapon experimentation, since you no longer have to farm caves hoping for a stone drop. It's worth noting that Bell Bearings for upgrade materials carry over into New Game+ cycles, so the work you put in now benefits future runs too. Keep in mind there are no Bell Bearings for Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, so those top-tier materials (+25 and Somber +10) still require you to hunt them individually.
All 4 Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing Locations
Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel
Unlocks: Smithing Stone (1), Smithing Stone (2), Glintstone Scrap
This is the earliest Bell Bearing you can realistically grab. The Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is located in northeast Liurnia of the Lakes. From the Gate Town North Site of Grace, ride along the base of the cliff heading northeast and you'll spot the tunnel entrance. Work your way through the mine and you'll reach the Crystalian boss at the bottom level. Crystalians are notoriously resistant to most damage types, the key is breaking their poise using heavy attacks, jump attacks, or blunt weapons. Once their stance breaks, land a critical hit to drastically reduce their defenses. Defeat the Crystalian and it drops the first Bell Bearing. With this, you can freely buy the first two tiers of Smithing Stones from the Twin Maiden Husks for the rest of your playthrough.
Sealed Tunnel
Unlocks: Smithing Stone (3), Smithing Stone (4), Explosive Stone
The Sealed Tunnel is found in the Capital Outskirts area of Altus Plateau. From the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Site of Grace, head southeast into the shallow lake and follow it to the southern end to find the tunnel entrance at the bottom of a small ravine. Once inside, activate the Site of Grace, then look for the illusory wall next to the summoning pool and firepit, hit it to reveal the true path into the dungeon. Drop down into the tunnel, and the chest containing the second Bell Bearing is right there in an alcove directly ahead of you. No boss fight required, making this one of the cleanest pickups in the game as long as you've made it to Altus Plateau.
Zamor Ruins
Unlocks: Smithing Stone (5), Smithing Stone (6)
This one requires you to reach the Mountaintops of the Giants, which means you'll need to complete Leyndell, the Royal Capital first, defeating Godfrey (the golden shade) and Morgott, the Omen King before riding the Grand Lift of Rold using the Rold Medallion from Melina. Once you're in the Mountaintops, locate the Zamor Ruins Site of Grace. The ruins are south of the grace site. Look for a staircase that descends below the ruins into a small underground room. Inside is a chest holding the third Bell Bearing. It's a straightforward pickup with no enemies guarding it directly, though the surrounding area can be dangerous at this stage of the game.
Dragon Temple
Unlocks: Smithing Stone (7), Smithing Stone (8)
The fourth and final Smithing Stone Bell Bearing is missable in the sense that it requires defeating the Godskin Duo, but this is actually a mandatory boss fight on the critical path. In Crumbling Farum Azula, descend to the platforms north of the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace and head northwest to reach the Dragon Temple Site of Grace. The Godskin Duo, a Godskin Apostle and a Godskin Noble fighting together waits just west of that grace, past two Banished Knights. They revive each other until you fully deplete a shared health bar, which can drag the fight out. Both enemies have a very low resistance to Sleep, so throwing a single Sleep Pot into the arena can buy you precious time to focus one of them down. Every Tarnished will collect this Bell Bearing as part of their main playthrough.
All 5 Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing Locations
Somber Smithing Stones upgrade special weapons which are the boss remembrance weapons, unique armaments like Moonveil, and so on. These weapons only go to +10 and only need one stone per tier, so these Bell Bearings are especially valuable for keeping your special weapons current.
Dragon-Burnt Ruins
Unlocks: Somber Smithing Stone (1), Somber Smithing Stone (2), Glintstone Scrap
Sellia Crystal Tunnel is in Caelid, and there's actually a way to get here very early in the game: a trapped chest in the Dragon-Burnt Ruins of Limgrave will teleport you directly into the tunnel. If you end up here under-leveled, don't panic and take a right from the shack you spawn in, head down the stairs, turn left, drop down, and activate the Site of Grace immediately. You can then warp out. When you're ready, fight through the tunnel and face the Fallingstar Beast at the end. It's a large gravity-manipulating boss that can be difficult in tight spaces, keep it away from the center of the arena during its second phase to avoid the wide AoE attack it uses. Defeating it drops the first Somberstone Bell Bearing.
Altus Tunnel
Unlocks: Somber Smithing Stone (3), Somber Smithing Stone (4), Cracked Crystal
Altus Tunnel is located southeast of the Forest-Spanning Greatbridge in Altus Plateau. Make your way through the dungeon and you'll face a duo boss: a Crystalian armed with a Spear and a Crystalian wielding a Ringblade. Like all Crystalians, they resist most damage types until you break their poise. The trick here is to focus one at a time, getting both of them to stagger simultaneously can be tricky, so prioritize the Spear variant first if you're playing it safe with range. Breaking poise and landing critical hits is still the fastest way to chunk their health.
First Church of Marika
Unlocks: Somber Smithing Stone (5), Somber Smithing Stone (6)
This one requires no boss fight at all. The First Church of Marika is located in the Mountaintops of the Giants, you'll need to access this region the same way as for Smithing Stone Bell Bearing [3] above. Once you're at the church, head out through the main entrance and go directly forward. Not far from the church's front door, you'll find a corpse on the ground holding the Bell Bearing. It's a simple pickup, but knowing where to look saves a lot of wandering in one of the game's more barren and difficult regions.
Tempest-Facing Balcony
Unlocks: Somber Smithing Stone (7), Somber Smithing Stone (8), Sanctuary Stone
Head to the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. From there, move north toward the cliff's edge and you'll find a corpse sitting on the precipice holding this Bell Bearing. No enemies guard it directly on the pickup spot, though the surrounding area in Farum Azula is full of Beastmen and other threats. This is a very important pickup for anyone upgrading special weapons in the late game, as Somber 7 and 8 are often a bottleneck at this stage.
Beside the Great Bridge
Unlocks: Somber Smithing Stone (9)
The fifth and final Somberstone Bell Bearing is found in a small church in Crumbling Farum Azula, just before the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace. The easiest approach is to reach that grace first, then take the elevator back down. Inside the church, the Bell Bearing is on a corpse placed in front of the altar. The area is guarded by a Beastman that continuously casts red lightning, wait for an opening between casts, move past it, and grab the item from the corpse at the altar. Somber Stone (9) brings your special weapons to their second-to-last upgrade step before needing an Ancient Dragon Somber Smithing Stone to cap them out at +10.
Conclusion
Tracking down all 9 Bell Bearings across the Lands Between is genuinely one of the best investments of time you can make in Elden Ring. Once the Twin Maiden Husks have everything, you can freely experiment with builds, swap weapons on the fly, and keep your arsenal fully upgraded without ever needing to farm caves again. The Smithing Stone bearings covers 1–8, while the Somberstone set handles Somber 1–9, the only stones left to hunt individually are the Ancient Dragon variants at the very top of each upgrade tree. Whether you're a new player or heading into New Game+, getting these early and often will make every region of the game significantly more comfortable.
