Why Phone Riddles Matter in Lies of P
When you interact with a ringing phone, a stranger who introduces himself as Arlecchino, the King of All Riddles, will present you with a riddle that you must answer correctly. Getting it right rewards you with a Trinity Key, used to unlock doors marked with the sacred triangle symbol. These Trinity Sanctums contain rare upgrade materials, special weapons, and items that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. There are five phones total, spread across Chapters II through X, so it pays to know exactly where they are before you pass them.
Phone 1 - Chapter II: Workshop Union Entrance (Krat City Hall Courtyard)
The first phone is found after pushing through the streets of Krat from the Krat City Hall Courtyard Stargazer. When you reach the bridge leading across to the Workshop Union, there is a passage on the right leading to the phone. You can also backtrack here from the Workshop Union Entrance Stargazer in Chapter III by heading up the ladders and crossing the bridge.
The Riddle: "By morning, it walks on feet numbering four. At mid-day just two, no less and no more. It walks on three feet when the evening arrives. And if you solve this, then I'll know you're alive."
Answer: Human
This is the classic Riddle of the Sphinx, referencing a human crawling as a baby, walking upright as an adult, and using a cane in old age. Selecting "Human" over "Monster" earns you your first Trinity Key.
Phone 2 - Chapter V: Malum District
From the Malum District Stargazer, just walk down the hall following the Black Rabbit symbols on the wall to get to an open space where enemies will come to kill you. There is a fire black rabbit symbol constructed from wood right in the center of the room. Walk past it to the left and enter the next doorway where you will climb the ladder to a ringing telephone.
The Riddle: "I stand tall and proud when I'm young and bold. But I'm short and humble once I've gotten old. What am I?"
Answer: Candle
The two options are "Boa Constrictor who finished Digesting" and "Candle." The candle shrinks as it burns, making it the clear answer. Solving this earns your second Trinity Key.
Phone 3 - Chapter VII: Grand Exhibition Gallery
You should come across the third phone naturally as you work your way through the Grand Exhibition. It rings in the hallway just after the area where you fight a blade-wielding robot that bursts through a gate.
The Riddle: "What cannot be used before it breaks?"
Answer: Egg
The options are "Egg" and "Glass." An egg must break before it can be used - as food, or as life. Choosing "Egg" is correct, but note that you won't immediately receive the Trinity Key for solving this riddle and will instead need to solve an additional environmental puzzle.
The Woman of Cold Puzzle: Not long after finding the phone, you'll head down the stairs and discover two statues. The right statue isn't the one on the left, so touch the right statue twice in a row to reveal a secret passage that houses your third Trinity Key.
Phone 4 - Chapter IX: Krat Central Station Street
Finding the fourth phone is straightforward. From the Krat Central Station Street Stargazer, head straight through the alcove and follow a linear path. At the fork where you must go left or right, look left to find the phone. This visit takes place the second time you return to Krat Central Station, late in the game.
The Riddle: "This blue flower has many ways to take root. But only on one man does it ever bear fruit."
Answer: Ergo
The two choices are "Ergo" and "A bruise." Ergo is the life force and currency running through every being in Krat - it uniquely bears fruit only in P. Answering correctly grants your fourth Trinity Key.
Phone 5 - Chapter X: Relic of Trismegistus Entrance
The fifth phone can be found on a cliff above the entrance to the boss door in the Relic of Trismegistus area. It is fairly hard to miss and should be directly in your eyesight as you approach the end of the level.
The Riddle (Confession): "Is Geppetto's creation a killer? CONFESS!"
Answer: Yes or No - both work
